Summary conclusion. Check the timing remembering to set the mag to fully advanced (slack wire). You will need a puller to remove the mag sprocket if it needs adjusting. If you leave the controls as they are at the moment retard will be pushed forward, advanced pulled back. If you decided to change choke and retard levers round (as they would have been from the factory see my earlier comment) then it's reversed, pull back to retard push forward for advance. Depending on your year of twin watch for the pressure relief valve as you take the timing cover off. Good luck

Ps I wonder if the cam ring on your mag is a bit worn and this explains the strange response on retarding the timing. Check both cylinders and set the timing as a compromise if they differ radically.
