1967 P11 rebuild - Dynamite on wheels

Started the 'limited' rebuild of my 1967 P11 today while i've got time at home
Its been burning oil for a while , certainly more than it normally does
Kitchen clear to give space , and head off with engine still in the frame , barrel off later ready for removing engine from the frame

Makes a change to do this at home and not on the way to a rally or a few days before leaving with a deadline looming
Its always been my long distance touring bike , and I dont think the G15CSR will replace it due to 2.5gall fuel tank but time will tell

also forces me to clean the bike while doing the rebuild . first impressions are that there is not ridge in barrel so may be just a new set of rings and hone (wishfull thinking at this stage)
Plan is to replace superblend main bearings and BE shells at the same time

Pistons in good condition although oil burning confirms oil consumption and blow-by past rings
heavy crusty deposits on crown
Cylinder bores in good condition with circ 1 -2 microns wear at maximum
Pistons are +.040 modern hepolite manufactured by JCC and sold under Genuine Hepolite brand by wassell

decided to de-glaze bores and fit new rings

rings are fully bedded in with top and second ring still with 15 thou ring gap , but the oil control ring is at circ 50 thou
must e very soft cast iron giving fast bed in , but reduced durability

overall , no significant problems that cant be easily overcome
not bad considering the distance and performance

Roy , it was either this or cut the hedges and i know which i prefer to do

check this utube clip out , is this why that called the P11 dynamite on wheels
I suspect this was a rod failure , after which the broken rod gets trapped between the crankcase and flywheel




Mine has had rod failure in the past , with extensive repairs ( pictures later ) , luckily no where near as bad as this one
I can only imagine what he was saying at this point !

SO anyone rebuilding a G15 or P11 should check their conrods during rebuild and fit the later 'superblend' main bearings

Rob , you wait until you see the welding on my crankcase - haha
I'd just sell it at a loss ASAP , I might even make you a low offer

Looks as though the gear lever would straighten out ok.
