I can't find any guidance on this in the AMC Workshop Manual or elsewhere.
I am assuming that with the crank/cam housings being aluminium, clearance when cold will be next to nothing.
Am I right?

Manual says cam wheel bushes (these are them aren't they?) of +/- 1/2 thou.. As you say as long as they turn smoothly with virtually no rock at all at, say, a cold room temperature, this will be OK. Remember the bushes and alloy housing will expand more than the steel spindle. HOWEVER: In theory though at freezing temperatures if there is no play at all at say 20 deg C they could get too tight when starting a freezing engine. You now have the factory specs should you be able to measure them. I would recommend expanding ball gauges for the spindle bush...You can get them for something like a tenner I think
