do it on the compression stroke, thats both pushrods free to turn.
you can set these engines with ignition in the retard position, or, what the book is getting at, in the advanced position by wedgeing the advance weights; I'd use a 1/4 inch nut: set it, mark it and then remove points plate after to remove the nut. Mark it clearly and there will be no problem.
While you are in there, check over the auto advance unit.
Wipe the centre spindle clean, DO NOT use abrasive paper, oil the spindle with a light oil, 3 in 1 or the like;do the same for the pivot pins of the weights, they are usually showing rusty red dust;have a look at the springs as well, are they stretched?
Just make sure that every thing goes back as it came off;mark it all with a dab of paint as a guide.
the cam should slide off easily, if it sticks at all its because the end has been hit and mushroomed, use an oil stone to remove any burr.
Under the blot head should be a shakeproof washer, then a plain washer.
This washer should not be so big as to restrict the movement of the cam when its all done up,
I have always put a thin 4BA washer under the first plain washer to keep it away.
A free moving auto advance will make a world of difference to acceleration and tick over.

Ah, you need to learn the secret of a happy marriage:
Compromise, compromise, compromise........
.......Never, EVER, compromise.
I should know - it's worked with all three of my wives.

My Greeves frame has been in our dining room for over a month now, the engine is in the garage waiting to go in the rear half then I can fit the front end and forks. I will probably do the assembly in the garage----when I can find some floor space!
