Hello all , i have recently aquired a 1925 AJS 350 E5 , the bike has not run for around 10 years . Without sounding like a complete spanner ,,, has anyone got any tips on how i should go about getting it running initially ? I have no experience with machines of this age and would welcome any help or advice .
I have got a service manual detailing the starting instructions .
Thanks

Oh dear,
there are such a lot of variable settings on a vintage bike. Not like a "modern" one.
#1 check spark
#2 remove the tap in the centre of the head and dribble a teeny bitof oil in; that will give you a bit of compression as it gets around the rings.
#3 establish which way the mag lever on the left advances.
next opsot apic if poss of your handlebar controls it would help to know where every thing is and what set up.
ie is the valve lifter under the left bar?
do you have a two lever throttle or an inverted twistgrip?
Then there is the oil pump setting, for gods sake dont put modern oil in a total loss system either.
So much easier to show you than to explain here; probably your best bet would be take it to your nearest section and buy several rounds of beer.
[Or you could drag it to deepest wiltshire with a bottle of decent red..............]
Ps beware spilling todays rubbish fuel on the paint, its better than paint stripper and you dont know what sort of paint you have.
