dynamo identification

hi

newbie here.
entered the world of AJS with a 1956 16ms it has a 500 top end and speedo fitted and isnt charging.
further inspection chain cover full of water and sealed with bathroom sealant. doesnt bode well.
dynamo is a lucas short type but i cant see a model code.
what i have is.....0 20028D
poss NLD

im not even sure this is the correct dynamo for this bike??

any help greatly appreciated.

Welcome!
Bike should have a Lucas E3N. Part #s 20028 A/F are E3Ns, so it does sound right for the bike.
Earlier ones, between 1950 and '54 had E3AR, #s 20017 A/E.
From '50 on they all had Lucas MCR2 voltage regulators.
Your dynamo has probably got an adjustable small tin strip secured by 2 screws into the outside of the body - this is for ensuring the dynamo can't slide into the chaincase and cause mayhem if the drive and primary chains were to clash.

You can check if the dynamo is ok institu.
